AMY POKORNY - First Female Deputy Sheriff in Madison County -
In 1981, Amy Pokorny became the first female deputy sheriff on the road patrol for the Madison County Sheriff's Office. Once becoming a member of the road patrol, Pokorny states that "a lot of the guys were skeptical about having me as a partner on patrol." She knew she would be able to handle the job, but her main goal was to prove to her fellow deputies that she was able to perform. After being on road patrol for several years, Pokorny moved to investigations where she finished her law enforcement career retiring in December of 2000. One thing that she still remembers about her career in law enforcement is that there is nothing routine about it. Still in 2000, she was rehired as a part-time deputy doing back ground investigations for new hires and is now working in the pistol permits office.
